Xibo for Linux has arrived

The long-awaited Xibo for Linux player has been released!

At Xibo, we are committed in our mission to break down the barriers and enable digital signage for everyone, and we've continuously developed our open source offering alongside the Xibo customer community. We are very proud to launch the first release of this player, adding yet another option for our customers, to bring to life their digital signage.

Our partnership with Canonical and Snapcraft

To create a great experience, Xibo teamed up with Canonical, the publishers of Ubuntu, and Snapcraft, the app store for Linux. By by distributing our Linux player as a snap, we are able to offer a simple, dependency-free installation, as well as the potential for automatic upgrades in the future, and it works across any distribution or version.

We will be continuing to work with Canonical and Snapcraft to bring you further insights on the development, launch and partnership which includes some insightful webinars, so keep your eyes open for more information.

Getting started with Xibo for Linux

As with every Xibo digital signage implementation, you need three things; a display, the Xibo Content Management System (CMS), and, one of Xibo's software players (Xibo for Linux in this case). When using Xibo for Linux you will likely also need a player device, to install the player software and connect to your display.

As an open source offering, Xibo for Linux is completely free, it's natively built for the Xibo CMS, which when you install on your own servers and is completely free, or combine with Xibo cloud hosting.

Get Xibo for Linux directly from the snap store to get started. You can find all the details on supported features on our website.

The Xibo for Linux installation guide is the best place to start, and of course please do engage with Community and use our knowledge base if you have questions.

Combining Xibo for Linux with Cloud

Managing your digital signage network can be a challenging and costly undertaking, however, by bringing together Xibo for Linux with our Xibo in the Cloud solution is a powerful and very cost effective combination!

Xibo in the Cloud has been built specifically for Xibo digital signage, and is kept in peak performance by our expert team round the clock. You can get started in less than 10 minutes, and with Xibo in the Cloud one-click or automated CMS upgrades are available, plus custom domain options. And to top it off, our expert support team are here for you, if you need some help, included in the cost.

You can choose to host in our UK, Germany, Singapore, Australia, or USA locations, keeping your content close to you.

It costs $1.70 per display slot per month, and can be purchased directly from our shop ... bargain, right?

2.1.0-beta Released

$

0

We are pleased to announce the release of our first beta for the 2.1 version of Xibo. The codename for this version is “Brooks”.

The 12P/Pons–Brooks comet was discovered 12 July 1812 and has an orbital period of 70.85 years. It will next be closest to Earth in 2024.

2.1.0-beta is a development preview only and should not be used in production. You can upgrade to this release from 1.8/2.0 series.

Main Focus

This release builds on the work completed in 2.1.0-alpha and 2.1.0-alpha2 further refining the new features that have been added. In addition we have:

  • added new tagging capabilities for setting values along with tags
  • added a migration task to convert existing statistics to the new model
  • improve the navigation in the new reporting menus
  • added a "distribution" report for analysing when certain Layouts/Media are played most often, by day of month, day of week and hour.

In total there are 18 resolved issues in this release, plus all updates from the 2.0.3 and upcoming 2.0.4 stable releases.

Migrating existing statistics

The alpha and alpha2 releases removed existing statistics and started collecting new ones in the new format.

This beta release will do more to preserve those statistics by renaming the stat table to stat-archive and then slowly migrating records over in the new format.

If MongoDB is configured then stats are migrated from stat and stat_archive into MongoDB.

Download

We're making this beta available for people to try using our recommended installation method, Docker. We will be providing release files for the stable 2.1.0 release for those of you running without Docker in due course.

Future development

Our immediate development work will be to prepare a 2.1.0 release candidate which will resolve any issues found with the beta release.

Beyond 2.1 we've begun developing 2.2, which will focus on improvements to the Scheduling capabilities of Xibo.

2.1.0 Released

We are pleased to announce our first release for the 2.1 version of Xibo. The codename for this version is “Brooks”.

The 12P/Pons–Brooks comet was discovered 12 July 1812 and has an orbital period of 70.85 years. It will next be closest to Earth in 2024.

2.1 has 3 focus points:

  • Two factor authentication
  • Proof of Play On/Off, Aggregation and Reporting
  • Tagging

Two Factor Authentication

In this release a user can protect their login to the CMS with Two Factor Authentication, via either Google Authenticator or Email.

When configured, the User will be asked to complete a two factor challenge by entering a code at login.

Proof of Play

2.1 brings improvements to the Proof of Play statistics collection, storage and presentation.

The following new 2.1 features are available:

  • Layout/Media and Widget settings to control whether statistics are collected for an item.
  • Collection Aggregation settings on the Display Settings Profile to configure Hourly/Daily/Individual statistics aggregation (Please note: this requires a supported Player).
  • Introduced a MongoDB statistics storage module for high-volume stats collection.

Migrating existing proof of play statistics on upgrade

If you have an existing CMS instance and upgrade to 2.1, your existing statistics will be temporarily unavilable while Xibo updates them.

On upgrade, Xibo copies all stat records into a stat_archive table, and then migrates them into the new format in the background. This may take some time if you have a lot of accumulated records.

If MongoDB is configured then stats are migrated from stat and stat_archive into MongoDB.

Tagging

We have also added a Tag administration screen where a user can now see and manage all tags in the system.
Values can also be collected with tags by configuring predefined options.

2.2.0-alpha2 Released

We are pleased to announce the release of our second development preview for the 2.2 version of Xibo. The codename for this version is “Olbers”.

13P/Olbers is a periodic comet with an orbital period of 69 years. The comet was discovered on March 6, 1815 and it will next come to perihelion on June 30, 2024.

2.2.0-alpha2 is a development preview only and should not be used in production. You can upgrade to this release from 1.8/2.x series.

Main Focus

The main focus for 2.2 is to improve the scheduling capabilities of Xibo. 2.2.0-alpha2 brings the following new features and improvements:

  • Emailed PDF Scheduled Reports
  • Auto-publish option for Layouts
  • Search the Schedule by Layout
  • Search Layouts by Display/Display Group
  • A new "spacer" Widget to empty a Region for a number of seconds
  • Default Transition to apply to all Widgets
  • "Read Only" view for Published Layouts with access to other areas of the CMS
  • A number of bug fixes from 2.1 and 2.0

We have added the following features to the CMS which will be implemented in each Player in due course:

  • Force HTTPS connection to the CMS
  • Move a Display between CMS instances

Scheduling: Interrupt Layout

Xibo 2.2 will introduce a new concept to its already extensive feature set. This feature, called Interrupt Layouts, will be a new type of event that can be created from the Schedule Calendar.

Interrupt Layouts will have a "share of voice" setting indicting how much in any hour period that Layout should be played. You can only have 1 active at any time.

As the name implies, an Interrupt Layout will interrupt your usual schedule, switch to playing from the Interrupt Layout for a period of time (calculated depending on the share of voice) and then switch back to the pre-interrupt content.

2.2.0-alpha2 includes the CMS side changes for this new feature, Player changes will follow as updated Players are released. This is an exciting new scheduling capability and we're looking forward to having it available on all Players.

Download

We're making this alpha available for people to try using our recommended installation method, Docker. We will be providing release files for the stable 2.2.0 release for those of you running without Docker in due course.

Future development

Our immediate development work will be to prepare a 2.2.0-beta release which will add more polish to all the features we've put in 2.2 so far. We will also be responding to your feedback and any bug reports.

Beyond 2.2 we've begun planning 2.3, which will focus on bringing together all of the feedback we've had in version 2.
