Improving Mental Health with Digital Signage

Last week we showed you 4 alternative display types that can be used with Xibo signage for safer digital signage.

As we continue to plan for a future where businesses, shops and education settings re-open, an important consideration will be the mental wellbeing of those returning to these settings. This week we take a closer look at how digital signage can be used across industries to guide and reassure returning customers, employees and students.

The impact of Covid-19 on Mental Health

The Covid-19 pandemic has not only caused economic and physical devastation across the world, but has also created a mental health crisis. While lockdowns and quarantines are designed to protect us physically, the long term effects of the isolation on our mental health is something that is being studied closely by healthcare teams globally.

The University of London reports that in January 2021 in the UK “depression and anxiety levels [were] the worst [they’d] been since June 2020” . With around 45% of people worried about catching covid and life satisfaction continuing to deteriorate, especially for the younger generation.

More than half of the Britons (53%) taking part in a recent YouGov study say their mental health has deteriorated due to the pandemic. There are many reasons for this including increased demands at home due to caring responsibilities, concerns about finances and job security, changing workload and work location, impact of being furloughed, bereavement and anxiety related to the fear of COVID-19 itself.

As businesses look to the future where employees could return safely to the workplace, a variety of measures will need to be implemented to help employees regain an effective work-life balance and address fears about returning to work. Poor mental health at work can lead to increased staff turnover, reduced engagement and high absenteeism.

With many employees not feeling comfortable enough to speak up about their mental health, it will be vitally important to keep those returning informed of the support available to them.

Tips for using digital signage to create positive mental health messaging

  • Display resources and mental health awareness information

    • In workplaces, healthcare areas and education settings, help reduce anxiety and stress and provide support to those returning, by clearly displaying who to contact, how to access support or Employee-Assistance-Programs (EAPs) available, if they are feeling stressed, anxious or low.
    • Internal communications in the workplace done through digital signage help engage all employees on-site, including those without email or computer access. This ensures that everyone knows about the mental health resources available to them. Oerlikon is an example of a Xibo customer who recently went digital with Xibo to upgrade their internal communications from paper based to digital.
  • Focus on messaging which creates a safe and supportive environment

    • This will be especially important for children returning to school after being home for such an extended period of time. They have come to rely on the safety of their parents, and will now need reminding that school is a safe place to be.
    • Digital Signage will be effective in the entrance to welcome them in, hallways to encourage social distancing, classrooms to encourage the importance of talking about how they are feeling.
  • Encourage safe physical activities

    • Physical activity is a powerful tool for improving mental health. Consider displaying digital signage in breakout areas within the workplace, canteens and hallways to encourage staff to take breaks, get fresh air and safely make the most of the outside where possible.
  • Highlight selfcare reminders

    • People often need reminding to practice self care. By displaying reminders on digital signage displays in high traffic areas, such as “tips to reduce stress” or “mindfulness ideas”, self care will become more on the forefront of people’s minds and create a more positive environment.
  • Show the facts to reduce misinformation

    • Use your digital signage to highlight important but factual information. While displaying a rolling count of daily covid cases is more likely to heighten stress levels, ensuring that your display showcases important facts and guidance from the government will reduce misinformation and anxiety.
  • Use calming colours and imagery suitable for your intended audience

    • Consider the colour scheme and imagery you use on your digital displays depending on your audience. Tranquil images of the outdoors and nature can enhance the feeling of calm for adults.
    • Blue and green tones can calm your mind, slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety. But be aware of your audience. Colour psychology studies have shown that too much blue can make children feel low, so consider pink for children, which reduces their anxiety and lowers their blood pressure.

Next week: Small Business Signage

The pandemic has had a major impact on many businesses, especially smaller independent retailers and hospitality settings. When lockdown measures ease and customers venture out again, the message of “shop local” will still be prominent in people's minds. Next week we’ll focus on Xibo for small businesses and how you can make the most of our cost effective solutions.

4 Benefits of Digital Signage for Small Business

Last week we showed you how digital signage can be used to improve the mental health of employees, students and customers as we plan for a post-covid future.

The pandemic has had a major impact on small businesses, with closures and redundancies a sad reality. For the small businesses who have survived the pandemic, we’re here to help you learn more about how digital signage can benefit your business.

Cost Effective

In a time when budgets are being tightened and there are potentially fewer resources at hand to help with marketing and promotional efforts, digital signage can offer a cost effective way to reach your customers.

Consider how much you usually spend on printed posters, advertising flyers, menus and shop window advertising. These short term displays not only cost money but time and resources as well. Going digital is quick and cost effective with Xibo.

Getting started with Xibo Signage is easy! All you need is the Xibo Content Management System (CMS), a digital screen and player software for your display.

The Xibo CMS is a web application, which is available free to download and self-host. But if you want to spend your valuable time focusing on your key business priorities, we can host and support your CMS with our Xibo in the Cloud hosting solution. You can try the Xibo hosted CMS for 14-days free too!

You can also run our native Xibo for Windows or Linux open-source player software for free! But if you are considering Android, Tizen or LG displays, we have commercial players available for these that are very competitively priced and perfectly suited for small to medium sized businesses.

Easy to Maintain

If you have stores in multiple locations or have content which would change regularly, such as daily menu specials, consider the amount of time it takes to replace posters and change promotions. By investing in a digital signage network, you can automatically display updates and relevant information, all easily scheduled and created within the Xibo CMS. Displays can differ per location and update instantly, leaving your staff to focus on the most important thing, your customers.

Another thing to consider if you have multiple screens, or even a single screen in a heavily trafficked area, is remote access. Digital signage remote management is the ability to use software to remotely resolve issues and manage your display network.

If you’re running Android devices with Xibo, you can now access them remotely with Webkey, Webkey is a separate Android application which you can install on your device, and it allows remote access to view and control the device as if you were using a local keyboard and mouse. This makes maintenance of the devices easier, more cost effective, as well as safer during these times of Covid-19.

Improved Customer Experience

Thank your customers for their support during these hard times by giving them an improved customer experience. Competition for business will be tough when businesses re-open. Many people will still want to follow the “shop local” messaging, give them an extra reason to visit your shop, café or restaurant.

Digital Signage can help you stand out from other businesses with powerful, visually appealing messages. These can not only increase your visitors' sense of security, with clearly visible and up to date Covid guidelines, but also highlight promotional offers and keep your visitors engaged with personalised content or interactive displays.

Key Part of Omnichannel Marketing Strategy

During the pandemic, people have become much more accustomed to shopping online. Small businesses, restaurants and pubs who had previously only operated offline, have now had to extend their businesses to become online in order to survive the effects of lockdown.

Social media has also played a huge role in helping small businesses during these difficult times, with many small outlets, restaurants and pubs promoting their businesses, take-aways and delivery services via social media.

So how can digital signage play a role in creating a seamless experience for your customers when your offline business re-opens? Chances are you’ll want to maintain your online presence. Digital signage can help new visitors discover your online channels by promoting your social accounts, hashtags and website address instore and in your restaurant or bar. QR codes can also be displayed to drive visitors to your website or app to take advantage of discounts and promotions online.

Next Week: Earn Money from your Digital Signage

Have you considered that your digital signage could be a valuable piece of real estate for other businesses? Whether you have one or hundreds of displays, with Xibo Adspace for Display Owners, you can turn your digital display into an advertising platform and generate an additional source of revenue for your business. Next week we’ll look into Xibo Adspace in more detail.

Make DOOH work for you!

Last week we looked at four benefits digital signage can have for small businesses. Another benefit of digital signage is the ability to use your displays as a valuable piece of real estate, driving income for your business. This week we’ll look at how Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising, with Xibo Adspace, can drive revenue for your business.

With recent Government announcements that Covid-19 restrictions will start being eased this month and non-essential retail could start to open in the coming months, now is the time to consider adding DOOH advertising to your business strategy.

What is DOOH?

Out-of-Home (OOH) Advertising has been around for many years. Before we entered lockdown and were instructed to stay at home, you would see OOH everywhere! Driving, waiting for a bus or going shopping in your local mall. Static billboards and advertising display posters have become commonplace. But as the digital age has progressed and consumers require more engaging and interactive methods of advertising to drive their purchase, so we have entered the age of DOOH.

Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising transforms the traditional method of static advertising posters into digital format. DOOH provides consumers with dynamic, engaging and relevant ads at the right time and the right place!

There is another layer to DOOH which is Programmatic DOOH. Like programmatic online advertising, specific conditions are set, based on data collected which trigger ads to be displayed. Programmatic technology allows for digital out-of-home advertising to be more targeted than before, thereby reaching the right audience at the right time. Ads can be programmed to display at specific times, based on triggers or context (e.g. location, or an event), and when data tells us there’s more traffic or a higher number of shoppers, for example.

Make DOOH work for you!

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected the DOOH market?

The DOOH market was set to see exponential growth, with Rapport predicting it to reach 24% of global advertising revenue by 2021. What they couldn’t predict was the global Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world in 2020 and continues in 2021.

With public spaces closed down and the majority of the world being ordered to stay home, DOOH Advertising plans were either halted or re-designed to focus on public service announcements. This in itself showed the power of DOOH. Impactful, informative, quick turnaround time with minimal physical interaction, unlike traditional paper advertising.

As we look ahead to Q2 of 2021, and the rest of the year, with global vaccination programs now being rolled out, the public is now looking to the not-so-distant future when we will be allowed out again. As such, businesses and advertisers are now planning again for outdoor advertising, with specific focus on driving an engaging, personalised and localised experience.

But for many digital display owners, especially those in small to medium size businesses, the idea of DOOH Advertising can be daunting. Costs can be high, set up complex and time consuming, requiring resourcing that just aren't available, especially during these uncertain times.

But not with Xibo Adspace.

What is Xibo Adspace?

Xibo Adspace is an advertising marketplace for digital signage. It is a cost-effective platform created for digital display owners and advertisers alike. Designed as the ideal entry into the DOOH Advertising market, Xibo Adspace removes financial barriers to starting your advertising campaigns and brings digital display owners and advertisers closer to consumers.

It is a fully-featured digital out-of-home advertising platform (DOOH platform). Xibo Adspace allows display owners to easily connect their Xibo Content Management System and all associated displays, from here owners can:

  • Set profiles and preferences
  • Enable advertising creatives to be delivered to their displays
  • Manage their inventory in an easy and automated fashion
“We created Xibo Adspace by popular demand from customers, to support their strategy to monetize existing digital signage real estate, and automate operations. Providing a simple, scalable and flexible platform so our customers can focus on their business” - Chris Hopkins - Sales and Marketing Director, Xibo

You can learn more about the capabilities of Xibo Adspace here.

How can I generate ad revenue using Xibo Adspace?

Xibo Adspace enables the opportunity for a display owner to generate revenue in two ways. Firstly our Private Marketplace where a Display Owner can send campaign proposals to known advertisers directly. We strongly recommend starting off in this way, to begin generating income from advertisers, businesses and brands that would want to advertise on your displays.

Secondly, Advertisers can find and build campaigns directly on displays that meet their requirements. The more accurate and concise information about your display is, the more likely you are to entice a potential advertiser, so make sure you fill in all the appropriate information in Adspace.

Enabling Xibo Adspace to self-promote and show advertising promoting the use of the platform, will help generate traffic and opportunities. We only show these adverts when nothing else is scheduled, but it's a great way to generate interest.

Find out how much revenue you could potentially earn with our handy revenue calculator.

Future ready your business

Throughout our Future Ready series of blogs, we’ve hoped to show you that, even though the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about uncertainty and change across all industries and locations in the world, there is hope. We will return to normality and there are many ways that digital signage can help be part of a positive new-normal.

We will continue to be there as an open-source solution for all to use, so that everyone can benefit from the advantages that digital signage has to offer during these strange times. Stay safe and stay digital!

Top 10 Questions about the DSCS9 Media Player

Back in 2019, Xibo joined forces with EV4 Ltd, creators of DSDevices media players, to exclusively sell the DSCS9 Android player in our online shop. This device has proven to be extremely popular amongst our customers. We receive a lot of questions around it, so in this blog we hope to answer the top 10 frequently asked questions about the DSCS9.

But before we get started on specifics, let’s first answer the basics:

What is a media player for signage?

A media player or digital signage player is a small device (hardware) that supplies content to a digital screen such as a TV, monitor, or other digital display. An external digital signage player is essential for running the software (Xibo player applications) required to display your content (unless your screen has a System on Chip (SoC) player)

What is the DSCS9?

The DSCS9 is an Android signage player built to run the Xibo for Android software. It comes with Xibo for Android pre-installed, so you can connect it to your CMS and Software Licence (sold separately) for a seamless deployment.

What do our customers want to know about the DSCS9?

1. How big is the DSCS9 and what does it weigh?

The DSCS9’s dimensions are 10.8cm deep x 12.2 cm wide x 2.3cm high and it weighs a mere 0.6kg

2. What comes in the box?

The DSCS9 Device, 1.2m HDMI cable and power supply

3. What version of Xibo for Android does the DSCS9 come with?

Xibo for Android version R205 is pre-installed, however you can upgrade the software to the latest version one of two ways: manually at the device or via CMS once the R205 is set up and connected to a CMS. Note that this version does not have gapless playback (R207) or Geo scheduling (R206), so if those are features you are requiring, we recommend upgrading the pre-installed software to the latest version. Information about the latest version of Xibo for Andoid and download instructions are available here.

4. If I buy the DSCS9, do I still need an Android Licence?

Yes, the DSCS9 is sold with an unlicensed Xibo for Android Player. You can purchase an Android subscription via our website.

5. What version of Android is the DSCS9 compatible with?

The DSCS9 runs on Android 6.0.1 but can be upgraded to Android 7.0.1. See our website for full instructions on how to upgrade.

6. Does the DSCS9 come with a mount or protective case?

Unfortunately not, but mounts and cases are widely available online, just be sure to use the correct DSCS9 dimensions and weight.

7. How much storage space does the DSCS9 come with and can the storage be increased?

The DSCS9 comes with 16GB eMMC (embedded Multi-Media Card) storage and can be increased with an SD Card.

8. What are the benefits of using a DSCS9?

Here are just a few:

  • It's our recommended hardware for the Xibo for Android Players. This is a device that we’ve tested and put through its places and have enough confidence in to sell alongside our solution. Customers who buy the DSCS9 can expect it to run the Player in a stable, performance-driven way.
  • Its size. The device is tiny and can therefore be deployed discreetly.
  • It comes with added benefits such as HDMI-CEC, the ability to update the Player version from the CMS, and that the Xibo Support Team are familiar with it so help is on hand if needed!
“The devices from DSDevices (DSDS9) have become our main hardware solution because of the full out-of-the-box integration with Xibo”. ~ Fit Solutions

9. How do I purchase a DSCS9?

You can buy the DSCS9 directly from our website. Please check our DSDevices Delivery FAQ’s to ensure we are able to ship to your country!

10. How much will postage cost?

This depends entirely on where you are ordering from! The DSCS9 is designed, tested and packaged in the United Kingdom, and manufactured in China. Delivery is handled by one of our logistics partners depending on whether you are inside or outside of the European Customs Unions.

We recently announced distribution improvements for EU countries (excluding the Republic of Ireland and countries not in the European Customs Union). You can read more about this in our distribution announcement blog and learn more about shipping costs on our shipping and delivery FAQ page.

An Introduction to Open Source Digital Signage

Awesome right? But if you’re new to the world of open source, you might have a few questions, and wonder what it means for you and your business. We’re here to help answer those burning questions!

What is Open Source Software?

When thinking about software or applications, consider the coding that the developer writes to make the software work. This “source code” runs in the background and the average user has no involvement with it. Most of the software which we use today is “closed source” meaning that the code is not accessible to the general public and is kept secure by the developer or company that owns it.

“Open source” software is the complete opposite. The source code is publicly available online. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to read the code, learn from it and improve it, provided that anything they do with it complies with the open source licence it has been made available under.

What parts of Xibo are Open Source?

At Xibo, we are committed to providing a fully functional digital signage solution entirely open source, under the AGPLv3 licence. With that goal in mind the core of Xibo, the content management system, is open source as are our players for Windows and Linux.

We also maintain a set of libraries and other components which are released as open source. All of the source code is available online in our @xibosignage organisation on GitHub.

Why are some parts of Xibo Open Source and others not?

Our journey with digital signage has been a long one, and although we started with an entirely open source solution, it became quickly apparent that users liked and appreciated the open nature of our software, but also wanted additional services such as a hosted Xibo CMS, players for other types of hardware and support.

To provide these capabilities, we develop and maintain some proprietary software, such as the platform which runs Xibo in the Cloud and our players for Xibo for Android, webOS and Tizen. While these are commercially available and proprietary, we are absolutely committed to keeping the core software open source.

What are the benefits of Xibo Open Source?

There are several benefits to using Xibo Open Source Digital Signage.

  • First and foremost, it’s cost effective! As in, it’s FREE! You can self-host our Content Management System and either a Windows or Linux player for your digital screen, for free.
  • Because it’s open source, it has the benefit of a large community providing valuable input into the development and improvement of the product, making the Xibo software the best it can be.
  • This large community also has a wealth of knowledge and offers valuable support to offer new and existing users.
  • The open source community is also highly innovative and offers the ability to develop integrations and add-ons with no additional cost.
  • Are you an agency or reseller? You may provide Xibo digital signage to your customers free of charge and charge for value added services such as installation, support, design services etc. Learn more on our Become a Partner page.

I’m not technical, can I still use the Xibo Open Source Software?

We’ve tried to make it as simple as we can for anyone to use our open source software! We have a wealth of documentation and guides on our website, available to take you through the process step by step. But we also understand that open source can be daunting if you’re new to it, and if the phrase “web server supporting PHP/MySQL” is gibberish to you, we recommend trying our cloud hosted solution, Xibo in the Cloud,  which is competitively priced and includes expert support from the Xibo team. You can try it out for free for 14 days to see what you think!

Play your part in Xibo Open Source Digital Signage

The heart of the Xibo Signage solution is our open source content management system. Last week we shared an introduction to open source digital signage, but if you want a bit more detail, read on!

If you’re currently running a self hosted CMS and / or our open source Windows or Linux players, this blog will offer some valuable insight into the future of our open source solution and how you can play your part in its growth.

What developments have been made on the Open Source CMS and players?

At Xibo, development starts with the content management system (CMS). The CMS we offer on our commercial Cloud hosting platform is the same CMS we make available as open source software under the AGPLv3 licence.

We’ve been working hard on our latest and greatest CMS, Xibo v3. This version, which is now in release candidate3, includes touch and web hook interactivity. We’ve also improved organisation with folders. Best practices and security are a main priority in our development plans and we always ensure the frameworks and libraries we use are up to date.

Our open source player for Windows, written in C#/.NET has recently been converted from WinForms to WPF. This has allowed us to add support for overlapping regions, transitions between widgets and add a Chrome based web rendering engine for embedded content.

The open source Player for Linux, written in C++/GTK is a more recent addition to the platform and currently has support for most 1.8 features. We have been working on stability and distribution and have recently introduced support for AppImage. Over the coming months we will be adding version 2 features to this player.

The latest CMS releases and source code can be found here:

What future plans are there for the Xibo Open Source Solutions?

We are in the midst of our “interactive signage” project which will be included in the Xibo v3 release coming soon. At Xibo, we add functionality first and then work on iterative improvements to that functionality. This is what we will be working on next.

Beyond that we have some exciting improvements coming to the way Widgets are designed, with a real focus on usability.

We are also hoping to bring the community together and move forward with the Linux Player. Currently the Linux Player is an early 1.8 capable player and needs refinement to become stable and then improvements from v2 and then v3! There is a lot of work to be done there and we’re hoping to get the community involved!

What are the benefits of Xibo Open Source?

There are many benefits for users and businesses when choosing open source software, as discussed in the first of this blog series, an Introduction to Open Source Digital Signage. Open source software can also bring benefits to development teams!

At Xibo we have built our CMS with extensibility in mind, so that a software developer can add to the platform, even if those additions are not things added to the product as a whole. We do this through a custom namespace (drop your PHP in the /custom folder), custom middleware (add your middleware to settings.php) and a Modular Widget architecture.

With these tools it's possible to add new pages to the CMS, new forms and new Widgets to add to Layouts! You can find out more about these tools in the developer documentation. This is a great place to go, whether you want to integrate, extend or even make your own player (we know how hard this is though, which is why we’ve made 5 players to cover a range of hardware!).

How can I get involved with the future of Xibo Open Source?

The best way to get involved with the project is to come and join us in our Community. Everything we do is out in the open and you can see our future plans, the things we’re working on and what our users are talking about.

If you have software development skills and want to pick up a bug or feature request we’re always happy to help.

The Xibo CMS is a PHP web application using the Slim Framework and a Bootstrap/jQuery based front end. The Windows Player is a windows application written in WPF/CSharp, and the Linux Player is written in C++ using GTK.

The Linux player is the area where we need the most help so join our community and get involved!
